A Unique Race Experience in the Borderland
The 3rd Annual Viva La Lucha 5K took place on Saturday, June 13, 2026, bringing together runners, families, wrestling fans, and community supporters for a morning unlike any other in the Borderland.
Organized by Lucha League Wrestling, the annual event combined fitness, entertainment, and community engagement into a memorable race-day experience. This year marked a new chapter for the event as participants gathered at Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino, creating an exciting backdrop for one of the region's most unique themed races.
As an event photographer, it was a privilege to document the energy, determination, and celebration that unfolded throughout the morning. From pre-race excitement to finish-line victories, every moment reflected the spirit that has made Viva La Lucha a growing tradition in the El Paso area.
The Morning Begins
Before sunrise, runners began arriving at Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino, checking in, warming up, and connecting with friends and fellow participants. The atmosphere was filled with anticipation as competitors prepared for the 7:00 AM start.
Unlike a traditional road race, Viva La Lucha brings its own personality to the starting line. Music filled the air, participants posed for photos, and the unmistakable influence of lucha libre culture was present throughout the venue. The colorful energy created an environment that felt more like a celebration than a competition.
These early moments are some of my favorite to capture because they showcase the excitement and anticipation that participants feel before taking on the course.
A Race Fueled by Lucha Libre Spirit
One of the defining features of the Viva La Lucha 5K is its unique connection to wrestling culture. Throughout the event, the influence of lucha libre could be seen everywhere.
Many participants embraced the theme by incorporating colorful masks, wrestling-inspired outfits, and creative costumes into their race-day attire. The result was a race environment filled with personality, enthusiasm, and plenty of opportunities for memorable photographs.
The event successfully blended athletic achievement with entertainment, creating an experience that appealed not only to runners but also to families and spectators who came out to support the community.
A Fast and Flat Course for Every Runner
This year's course around the Sunland Park Racetrack area offered participants a fast and relatively flat route that appealed to runners of all experience levels.
Competitive athletes pushed the pace in pursuit of personal records and podium finishes, while families and casual participants enjoyed the opportunity to complete the course at their own pace. The layout allowed runners to focus on their performance while enjoying the supportive atmosphere surrounding the event.
As I moved throughout the course, I was able to capture a wide range of moments—from focused competitors striving for their best times to families sharing smiles and encouragement along the route.
The diversity of participants highlighted one of the event's greatest strengths: everyone was welcome.
Capturing the Stories Behind the Race
While every race has winners and finishers, the real story often lies in the personal journeys taking place throughout the event.
Photography allows those stories to be preserved long after race day ends.
Throughout the morning, I focused on documenting authentic moments that reflected the spirit of the Viva La Lucha 5K:
• Determined runners pushing through the final stretch.
• Families enjoying a morning together.
• Friends encouraging one another on the course.
• Volunteers helping create a seamless event experience.
• Participants celebrating their accomplishments at the finish line.
Every photograph captured a small piece of a larger story—a community coming together through fitness, fun, and shared experiences.
The Finish Line Celebration
As the morning progressed, the finish line became the center of excitement.
Participants crossed with smiles, cheers, and a tremendous sense of accomplishment. Some celebrated personal bests, while others simply enjoyed completing the course alongside friends and family.
The energy at the finish line reflected everything that made the event successful. It wasn't solely about competition—it was about participation, perseverance, and celebrating achievements both big and small.
These are often the most rewarding moments to photograph because they showcase genuine emotions and unforgettable memories.
More Than a Race
What makes the Viva La Lucha 5K special is its ability to bring together different parts of the community.
Runners, wrestling fans, families, local supporters, volunteers, and organizers all played a role in creating an event that felt welcoming and inclusive. The combination of athletic challenge and community celebration made the race stand out from many traditional 5K events.
By blending the excitement of lucha libre culture with a focus on health, fitness, and community engagement, Lucha League Wrestling has created an event that continues to grow and attract new participants each year.
Building a Lasting Gallery of Memories
One of my goals when covering community events is to create more than just photographs—I want to preserve memories.
The full gallery from the 3rd Annual Viva La Lucha 5K highlights the athletes, families, volunteers, organizers, and supporters who made the event possible. Each image serves as a reminder of the hard work, dedication, and positive energy that defined the morning.
Whether participants were racing for a personal best, enjoying a family outing, or simply supporting the event from the sidelines, their contributions helped create an atmosphere worth remembering.
