Badass Human Race El Paso was more than an obstacle course race—it was an unforgettable experience. From completing every obstacle in the 0605 wave to photographing fellow racers and sharing a free gallery, here's my story.
Badass Human Race El Paso: More Than Just an Obstacle Course Race
When I signed up for the Badass Human Race El Paso, I expected obstacles, sweat, and a challenge. What I didn't expect was to walk away with an experience that would leave such a lasting impression, not only as a participant but also as a photographer and supporter of the incredible community that makes these events so special.
On race day, I lined up with the 6:05am wave, ready to test my limits and see what I was capable of accomplishing. Like many racers standing at the starting line, I felt a mix of excitement and anticipation. The energy was contagious, and everyone around me seemed ready to embrace the challenge ahead.
Little did I know that the race itself would only be the beginning of my adventure.
Starting Strong with the 0605 Wave
The early morning atmosphere in El Paso was electric. Participants gathered before sunrise, stretching, laughing, taking photos, and mentally preparing for what was ahead.
As the 0605 wave launched, the excitement immediately shifted into action. Every obstacle represented a new challenge, and every mile offered an opportunity to push beyond perceived limits. One of the things I appreciated most about the event was how supportive the participants were. Even though everyone was technically racing, there was a strong sense of teamwork throughout the course. People encouraged strangers, celebrated victories, and helped each other through difficult sections.
That spirit is what makes the Badass Human Race stand out.
Conquering Every Obstacle
Obstacle course races are designed to test more than physical strength. They challenge endurance, determination, problem-solving, and mental toughness. Throughout the course, I approached each obstacle with one goal in mind: complete every single one. Some required upper-body strength. Others demanded balance, agility, or perseverance. A few pushed me outside my comfort zone, but that's exactly why I was there.
Each successful obstacle brought a sense of accomplishment. Every challenge overcome reinforced the belief that limits are often much farther away than we think. By the time I crossed the finish line, I had successfully completed every obstacle on the course.
That feeling was unforgettable.
Earning My Medal
Crossing the finish line is always rewarding, but receiving the medal felt like the perfect conclusion to the race itself. Especially after emerging from the icy cold plunge of the last obstacle! The medal represented more than miles completed or obstacles conquered. It symbolized commitment, effort, and the willingness to embrace a challenge. For many participants, these medals become reminders of personal victories. They serve as proof that difficult goals can be achieved through persistence and determination.
As I stood there with my medal, I felt proud of what I had accomplished.
But my day wasn't over yet.
A Different Mission Begins
After completing the race, I headed back my car to change clothes and prepare for something entirely different.
I grabbed my camera.
As a photographer, I've always believed that some of the most powerful moments happen when people are fully immersed in an experience. Obstacle races provide countless opportunities to capture those authentic emotions—determination, excitement, exhaustion, triumph, and pure joy.
Instead of heading home, I decided to walk the entire course again. This time, I wasn't racing. I was documenting.
Walking the Course in Reverse
With camera in hand, I entered the course and began walking it in reverse. This perspective allowed me to encounter participants at various stages of their journey. Some were just beginning their adventure. Others were battling through difficult obstacles. Many were experiencing moments they would remember for years.
Walking the course offered a completely different appreciation for the event. Rather than focusing on my own performance, I could focus on the stories unfolding all around me.
Every racer had their own reason for being there:
• Personal fitness goals
• Family challenges
• Team-building experiences
• Bucket-list achievements
• Personal transformation journeys
Each face told a story. Each obstacle created a moment worth capturing.
Capturing the Human Side of the Race
Photography is about more than taking pictures. It's about preserving moments that matter.
Throughout the course, I photographed participants as they climbed, crawled, balanced, lifted, jumped, and pushed through challenges. Some images captured determination. Others captured laughter. Many captured the powerful moment when racers realized they were capable of more than they initially believed. The most rewarding part was seeing complete strangers encouraging one another. That sense of community was present everywhere.
The Badass Human Race wasn't simply about competition. It was about people helping people become stronger.
Creating a Free Race Gallery
After the event ended, the real work began. I sorted through hundreds of photographs, edited images, organized galleries, and prepared everything for sharing.
My goal was simple: Make the photos available to everyone for free (see below for gallery link).
Many participants never get to see themselves in action during obstacle races. Professional race photos can sometimes be expensive, and many memorable moments go undocumented. I wanted racers to have access to images that reflected their achievements and experiences. Every photo represented hard work, determination, and courage. Those memories deserved to be shared.
Sharing the Gallery with Race Officials and Participants
Once the gallery was complete, I shared it with race officials and made it available for participants to enjoy.
The response was incredible. People were excited to find photos of themselves, their friends, teammates, and family members. Many participants relived the experience through the images and shared them across social media.
Watching others reconnect with those moments was almost as rewarding as completing the race itself. Photography gave me the opportunity to contribute something meaningful back to the community.
