A Unique Perspective at Border Beast Battle 10
This past March, athletes from across the region gathered at West Texas Dungeon for Border Beast Battle 10, a strongman competition that tested strength, grit, and determination across a full day of challenging events.
For me, the competition offered a unique experience unlike any other event I've covered.
Not only was I there as a photographer documenting the action, but I was also one of the athletes stepping onto the competition floor and putting my own strength to the test.
Balancing a camera and competition prep may sound challenging, and it certainly was, but it also provided an opportunity to capture the event from a perspective few people get to experience. I wasn't just observing the competition - I was living it alongside the athletes featured in this gallery.
The Energy of Competition Day
From the moment competitors arrived at West Texas Dungeon, the atmosphere was electric.
Strongman competitions bring together a special community. While athletes compete against one another throughout the day, there is also an overwhelming sense of support and camaraderie. Competitors cheer for personal records, celebrate successful lifts, and encourage each other through difficult events.
As athletes checked in, warmed up, and discussed strategy, the anticipation continued to build. Months of training had led to this moment, and every competitor was eager to see how their preparation would translate onto the competition floor.
Those early moments are some of my favorite to photograph because they reveal the focus, excitement, and determination that define strength sports.
Experiencing the Competition as an Athlete
Unlike many events I photograph, Border Beast Battle 10 required me to switch roles throughout the day.
One moment I was behind the camera capturing an athlete preparing for a heavy lift. The next, I was preparing for my own event, focusing on technique, breathing, and execution.
Being both a competitor and photographer created a deeper appreciation for what every athlete was experiencing.
I understood the nerves before stepping up to an implement.
I understood the physical demands of each event.
I understood the relief that comes from completing a difficult run and the satisfaction of achieving a goal you've spent months preparing for.
That firsthand experience helped me recognize and capture moments that might otherwise go unnoticed.
The Strength, Determination, and Heart of Strongman
Strongman is about more than moving heavy weight.
It is about perseverance, resilience, and finding a way to keep pushing forward when every muscle fiber is telling you to stop.
Throughout Border Beast Battle 10, athletes demonstrated incredible determination as they tackled each challenge placed before them. Every event required a combination of strength, technique, endurance, and mental toughness.
The competition showcased what makes strongman such a compelling sport. Athletes of different backgrounds, ages, and experience levels came together to challenge themselves and support one another throughout the day.
The result was an environment that was both highly competitive and incredibly supportive.
Capturing the Moments Between the Lifts
While the big lifts and dramatic finishes naturally draw attention, some of the most meaningful moments happen between events.
The encouragement from fellow competitors.
The coaches offering advice.
The families cheering from the sidelines.
The celebration after a successful attempt.
The quiet focus before stepping onto the platform.
These moments tell the complete story of a strongman competition and help showcase the community that exists behind the sport.
As I reviewed the images after the event, I realized many of my favorite photographs weren't necessarily the heaviest lifts of the day. They were the moments that revealed the character, determination, and sportsmanship of the athletes involved.
Building a Gallery for the Strongman Community
After the competition ended, the work shifted from the competition floor to the editing desk.
My goal was to create a gallery that accurately reflected the intensity and excitement of Border Beast Battle 10 while also highlighting the people who make the event special.
Every image represents an athlete who invested countless hours into training, recovery, nutrition, and preparation. Every competitor earned their place on the competition floor, and every lift told part of their story.
The gallery is intended to celebrate those efforts and provide athletes with lasting memories of their performances.

Competitions like Border Beast Battle do more than determine winners and rankings.

West Texas Dungeon continues to be an important gathering place for strength athletes throughout the region, providing an environment where competitors can challenge themselves while being supported by a passionate community.
A Day I Won't Forget
Border Beast Battle 10 was memorable not only because I competed but because it allowed me to experience the event from two different perspectives.
As an athlete, I felt the pressure, excitement, and satisfaction that comes with stepping onto the competition floor.
As a photographer, I had the privilege of preserving those same experiences for fellow competitors and their families.
Together, those perspectives created a deeper appreciation for the sport, the athletes, and the community that makes strongman so special.
